A Message from the President

2010 signified the Centennial of the National Urban League’s commitment to service by empowering communities and changing lives. In 2011, Urban League Southern Connecticut (ULSC) continues to advance the movement through education and advocacy emphasizing the importance of enabling African Americans and other minority groups to secure and sustain economic self-reliance and parity.

USLC has sought to address the most pressing issues of the four counties and eight cities we serve by offering relevant programs and services that meet the needs of the individuals and families in these areas and beyond. This year alone, we have touched the lives of 2,277 people through our signature programs such as the Mortgage Mediation Program (MMP), financial education and credit repair. We became a leader in workforce development training for the hard to serve in the field of renewable energy. We launched the first Senior WorkSearch Center in the state, with AARP, to provide career resources for those forced to return to work. Yet, our work continues.

As we look ahead during these tough economic times, we realize that the Urban League movement continues to be as relevant today as it was 40 years ago. Nonprofits worldwide are experiencing declining revenue and contributions. Thus, we have aligned the organization to offer fee for services that will help to off-set the dwindling funding streams. We have partnered with other organizations to become Smart Energy Solutions, a residential energy retrofitting program, that can compete for government contracts and put people to work. We have launched the first micro-lending and monetary services program, Smart Money Center, to assist small business and minority contractors overcome the credit challenges. We have focused our efforts on providing at-risk-youth with an alternative to secondary education by offering entrepreneurial education and occupational skills training in a high demand industry. Yet, our work continues.

We need your help to respond to the growing demand for these important services that educate and employ individuals. Please join us in the movement towards economic sustainability and equality for all minorities. Contribute your time, your talent and or treasure today!

Thank you,
Valarie Shultz-Wilson President & CEO
